POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Elms College senior
forward Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) scored a
breakaway goal, but three players tallied second-half scores to
help lift Vassar College to a 3-1 victory over the Blazers in
Saturday afternoon’s non-conference women’s soccer
match.
With the loss, Elms falls to 0-1 on the season, while Vassar
improves to 2-0 overall.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Gagne found a crease in the
Brewer midfield and outran the defense before putting a shot in the
back of the net, cutting the Vassar lead to 2-1 at the 87:10
mark.
From there, the Brewers received their third goal of the half,
this one off the foot of Allison McManis (Oakland,
CA) who placed a shot past the keeper after corralling a
cross from Sabrina Martins (Bayside, NY) giving
Vassar a 3-1 lead.
Following a scoreless first period of play, Vassar’s
Alix Zongrone (Spartanburg, SC) got the Brewers on
the board in the 67th minute of the contest, scoring on a ball that
was hit off the cross bar.
The Brewers extended their lead to 2-0 shortly thereafter as
Keiko Kurita (Scotts Valley, CA) beat a defender
and rifled a shot past the goalie to extend the lead.
Elms freshman keeper Molly Corse (Bernardston,
MA) collected 17 saves between the pipes, while Gagne
finished with two shots in the game.
Senior defender Serina Percoski (Westfield, MA)
and freshman defender Cassandra Tetrault (Springfield,
MA) each tallied a shot in the losing effort.
The Blazers return to non-conference action Thursday, Sept. 10
when they travel to North Adams, MA to take on MCLA. Kick-off is
slated for 4:00 p.m.
