Vurno Reaches 200 Point Milestone As Lacrosse Extends Win Streak To Three

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.) became the first Blazer to reach the 200 career points milestone as the Elms College women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three games with a 19-3 New England Collegiate Conference victory over Becker on Tuesday night.

Vurno scored three goals and added two assists to boost her career points total to a program-record 204. Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.) netted a game-high seven goals for Elms (6-8, 5-0 NECC) and Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) added four goals and one assist. Alissa Porfilio (Agawam, Mass.) scored three goals and helped on four more for the Blazers.

The Blazers led 3-2 nearly 10 minutes into the game and then scored nine unanswered goals before halftime to take a 12-2 lead into the break. Elms then scored the first three goals after halftime to lead comfortably the rest of the way.

Samantha Carter (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) scored twice for the Hawks (1-12, 1-5 NECC) and Kayla Hanley (Franklin, Mass.) had one goal. Despite allowing 19 goals, Becker goalkeeper Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine) came up with an impressive 13 saves while under duress from 37 Blazer shots in the game.

Elms held a 37-8 advantage in shots, a 16-7 lead in draw controls and forced Becker into 32 turnovers while committing just 20.

Tuesday's game was the final regular-season home game for the Blazers. Elms will wrap up the regular season at Southern Vermont (April 26) and Wheelock (April 28) before entering the NECC tournament. Becker will host Newbury on April 28 to close the season.

The top two seeds will earn a bye into the NECC semifinals on May 3 while the Nos. 3-6 seeds battle in the opening round on May 1. The higher seeded team will host each NECC tournament game, including the championship game on May 5.
