Blazers Surge To Senior Day Win Over Newbury

CHICOPEE, Mass. – A first-half surge fueled the Elms College lacrosse team to a 19-5 Senior Day win over Newbury on Saturday afternoon at Leary Field.

With a slim 3-2 lead 10 minutes into the contest, the Blazers (5-8, 4-0 New England Collegiate Conference) rattled off a dozen unanswered goals to build a 15-2 halftime advantage.

Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.) got the rally started and scored five of the 12 Elms goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.) scored three times during the run and a game-high six in the game. Victoria-Lynn Smith (Somers, Conn.) and Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) each added three goals in the game for Elms and Soucia finished with a game-high five assists while Haley Roberts (Westfield, Mass.) added four.

Venezia Delgadillo (Sharon, Mass.) scored a team-high three goals for Newbury (2-9, 2-3 NECC) and Nightawk goalkeeper Keely Molloy (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished with 15 saves in the game.

Elms held slim advantages in turnovers (13-14) draw controls ( 13-12) and ground balls (10-8) but had a 44-11 advantage in shot attempts, resulting in the convincing victory.

Saturday's game was Senior Day for Blazer seniors Soucia, Madison Crawford, Alissa Porfilio, Madison Jung, Arianna Santiago-Sullivan, Smith, Haley George, Roberts,  and Lindsey McNiff.

The Blazers will host Becker in the regular-season home finale on April 24 while Newbury takes on Wheelock the same day.
