Blazers Come Up Short Against Sage

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Jackie Soucia led the Elms women's lacrosse team with two goals and two assists but the Blazers fell 14-8 to Sage at Leary Field on Tuesday night.

The Blazers (0-3) had the early 1-0 advantage when Kaila Abrams (Derry, N.H.) scored just more than two minutes into the game with the assist from Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.). Sage (1-2) scored the next four goals, including three from Torri Sperl (Saugerties, N.Y.), and held the lead the rest of the way.

Elms trailed 7-2 with 11 minutes left in the first half before cutting the deficit to just 9-6 at the break. The Gators answered with five of the first six goals of the second half to pull ahead 14-7 before Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.) scored late for the Blazers to make it 14-8.

Richard finished with two goals and an assist in the game, while Vurno, Alecia Keesee (Westfield, Mass.), Abrams, and Haley Roberts (Westfield, Mass.) each added one. Emily Huber (Jefferson, Maine) tallied three saves in goal for the Blazers and Soucia caused a team-high three turnovers.

Sperl led Sage with five goals and added two assists while Martine Ianniello (Havre de Grace, Md.) added four goals and an assist. Sage goalkeeper Jenna Cislak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) collected 16 saves in the win.

The Blazers return to action on Thursday when they visit Regis (Mass.) at 7:00 p.m.
