WOMEN'S LACROSSE SUNK BY SMITH COLLEGE, 21-3

CHICOPEE, MA, March 24, 2009 - Freshman midfielder Mary Pasini (Columbus, OH), junior attack Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) and freshman attack Sarah Knowles (North Kingston, RI) netted three goals apiece and the visiting Pioneers raced out to a 14-goal halftime lead en route to a 21-3 win over Elms College in Tuesday's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

Smith won its first game of the year and improved to 1-2, while Elms College remained winless at 0-4.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the game's opening 10:57 as Whiting tallied twice and senior attack Blair Rapalya (Prides Crossing, MA) added her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the year.

A total of 11 players scored for Smith, which outshot the host Blazers 26-3 in the opening half and led 16-2 at intermission.

Freshman attack Katlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, MA) netted her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the year, sophomore midfielder Jenn Lough (Feeding Hills, MA) added her fifth goal this season, and  freshman goalkeeper Holly Braziel (Shelburne Falls, MA) turned away 10 shots for the Blazers.

Elms College returns to New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action at Bridgewater State on Saturday, March 28. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
