Strong Start Pushes Mariners Past Blazers

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College women's basketball team fell to the visiting Mitchell College Mariners 72-56 on Saturday afternoon at Picknelly Arena. The loss puts the Blazers at 5-13 overall and 1-4 in the New England Collegiate Conference.  

Mitchell got off to a 6-0 start in the opening 1:37. The Blazers would score the next four points, the two team went on to trade baskets for the next four minutes. With the score 14-10 the Mariners closed the quarter scoring seven of the final nine points of the stanza to lead 18-10 after one. The visitors started the second quarter with a 9-0 run. The Mariners start to pull away, and took a 38-20 advantage into the break.

The home side came out with energy and played its best 10 minutes of the game in the third quarter, but were unable to cut in the deficit trailing by 19 points going into the fourth. The Blazers outscored the visitors 18-15 in the final quarter, but would loss the home conference game 72-56

McKenzie Huria (Terryville, CT) paced Elms with 16 points while Regina LeBlanc (Enfield, CT) and Angelica Peguero-Flores (Springfield, MA) each provided 10.

The Blazers are back in action on Saturday 1/1 at 2PM when they host Rivier University in non-conference play.
