Women’s Basketball Handles Southern Vermont, 57-36
Chicopee, Mass. – Elms College sophomore
Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) reached a
double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds, helping her team to a
57-36 victory over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe
Southern Vermont Tuesday night at Picknelly Arena.
Elms ended a two-game skid to go 8-13 on the season and 7-5 in
NECC play. Southern Vermont falls to 3-19 on the year and 2-12 in
the conference.
The Blazers got rolling early with an 11-0 start capped off by
Condon’s two free throws. The Mountaineers were held
scoreless until the 14:12 mark when Tiarra Hall
(Washington, D.C.) stopped the drought with her only two
points of the contest.
Elms would lead by as many as 13 in the opening frame and took a
30-19 lead into the half.
The Mountaineers opened the second half with five quick points
including a three by sophomore Alyssa Davis (West Burke,
V.T.) who scored 11 on the night, but that was as close as
Southern Vermont would get. The Blazers would extend the lead to as
many as 21 and held the Mountaineers to 19.7 percent shooting for
the game. The Blazers also dominated the inside game, outscoring
Southern Vermont 32-10 in the paint.
Leading Southern Vermont was sophomore Joa Claircius
(Clermont, Fla.) with 17 points, while freshman
Christie Henry (Essex, V.T.) dominated the boards
with 20 rebounds.
Blazer freshman Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.)
netted 13 points off the bench, while sophomore teammate
Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) added 11 and
five assists. Senior Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown,
Mass.) contributed seven points and eight boards for the
Blazers.
Elms returns to NECC action on Thursday when they host Lesley
University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
