Women’s Basketball Wears Down Southern Vermont

HUGE SECOND HALF LEADS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BY SOUTHERN VERMONT, 67-44

CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 17, 2009 - Elms College outscored Southern Vermont College 38-16 in the second half en route to a 67-44 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) win Tuesday night at the Maguire Center. Junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers.

Elms improved to 13-10 overall and 11-3 in the NECC, while the Mountaineers fell to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

Senior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) filled the score sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots for the Blazers. Freshman guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA) added 14 points with seven assists and four boards.

Southern Vermont was led by freshman guard Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL), who scored 12 points to go with four assists, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward Rachel Pannell (Detroit, MI) also scored 12 points and pulled down five boards and freshman guard/forward Alyssa Davis (West Burke, VT) added 11 points and three assists.

Elms held a slim 29-28 lead at the half and opened the second frame with a 9-2 run to open a 37-30 lead three minutes into the period. The Blazers used an 11-0 run that was capped by a pair of Brogna free throws to open a 15-point lead, 48-33, at the nine-minute mark and then went on a 17-4 run to close the game.

Elms shot 51.6 percent (16-31) from the field in the second half and shot 46 percent (29-63) for the game while holding the Mountaineers to 18.8 percent (6-32) from the floor in the second half and 28.1 percent (18-64) for the game.

The Blazers return to action Thursday when they host Lesley in a NECC contest. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Maguire Center.
