Softball Picks Up two Wins In Conference Play

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Softball team hosted Newbury College in a NECC doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The Blazers would pick up two big wins and remain in third place in the standings. The Blazers were the host; however they would be the visiting team in both games.

 

Game 1 - Elms 5, Newbury 2

Both teams waited until the 6th inning to score any runs. Elms would take a one run lead in the top of the frame when Maddison Messier (Warren, MA) singled in Katelyn Sylvia (Southwick, MA). The Nighthawks would answer in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own, tying the game at 1-1.

The Blazers would not be denied and came right back with a four spot in the top of the seventh to jump back in front 5-1. Sylvia and Cat Wrang (Middletown, CT) would both double in the inning, Messier would hit a sac fly pushing across the final run. Newbury would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but was only able to plate one run after some timely defense from the blazers, giving Elms the 5-2 win.

Lisa Lusardi (Enfield, CT) put up another strong performance on the mound for the Blazers and would get credit for the win.

 

Game 2 – Elms 10, Newbury 3

Kayla Sylvia (Southwick, MA) started out game two with a bang when she smashed a solo home run over the left field fence giving the Blazers an early 1-0 lead. Newbury would come right back with three runs of their own and the top of the inning and jump out front 3-1.

Elms would take control of the game in the top of the 2nd putting up five runs. Newbury pitching would walk in three runs and Lisa Lusardi (Enfield, CT) would single, picking up two RBI's.

The Blazers would add on four more runs in the top of the 7th to put the game out of reach on hits from Sylvia, Messier and Lusardi.

Raenna Tumel (Stafford, CT) would pitch 7 strong innings and pick up the win.

Elms is in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Eastern Nazarene in a big NECC doubleheader at 3pm and 5pm.
