Softball Splits Home Opener With Mitchell

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Softball team played two tight games in their home opener on Cheryl R. Condon field on Sunday. Both games of the conference doubleheader with Mitchell College came down to the last inning with the Blazers taking game one 8-7 and dropping game two 5-4.

Game 1 – Elms 8, Mitchell 7

Game one started with the Mariners jumping out with a five run top of the first inning. The Blazers would get two runs back in the bottom of the frame and take a lead 7-5 with a five spot in the bottom of the second. Lisa Lusardi (Enfield, CT) was able to step on the mound and hold Mitchell off of the board until the top of the seventh. The Mariners were able to get two huge runs and tie things up; however the Blazers would not be denied and would walk off with the win on a hit from Katelyn Sylvia (Southwick, MA) scoring Ryanne Fournier.

Cat Wrang (Middeltown, CT) and Sylvia would lead the way for the Blazers combining for six hits and four RBI's. Tea Sullivan (Dracut, MA)  Lusardi  and Madison  Messier  (Warren, MA) all pithed in with two hits apiece.

Lusardi would pick up the win for the Blazers.

 

Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Elms 4

Game two would also be decided in the final inning, this time with the Mariners coming away with the win. Elms would jump out in front scoring 4 runs in the first two innings only to see Mitchell come right back with a three spot in the top of the third. The score would remain that way until the top of the seventh when Mitchell was able to string together several hits and two runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Katelyn Silvia (Southwick, MA) would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a double but would never advance any further.

Cat Wrang (Middeltown, CT) would lead the way again with two hits, Sofie Oliveira (Windsor Locks, CT) would take the loss for the Blazers.

Elms will host Nichols College on Thursday with a non – conference doubleheader, first pitch at 3 p.m.
