Newbury Wins Blazer Invitational

CHICOPEE, MA. Sept. 22, 2007 -  Newbury College junior Herrel Siller (Palo Alto, CA) took first place overall in the men's 8,000-meter race and Mount Ida College sophomore Megan Hogan (Saratoga Springs, NY) won the women's 5,000-meter race at Saturday's Blazer Invitational men's and women's cross country meet at Chicopee Memorial State Park.

Siller raced to a 28:09 to outpace Lesley University junior Francis Cusick (Arlington, MA) by 90 seconds. Freshman Branden Mountain (Bangor, ME) finished fourth overall with a time of 30:52, and junior Stephan Desjardins (Cumberland, ME) placed seventh in 32:07 to help lead the Nighthawks in the six-team field.

In the women's race, Hogan clocked a course-record of 1954 to break the previous record of 20:51 by Southern Vermont's Kathleen Newton set in 2003.

Newbury tallied 39 points to edge defending champion Johnson State College (50) and Eastern Nazarene College (59).

Junior Jill Bigos (Florence, MA) placed sixth as Elms College's top finisher.

The Lesley University women's team took home the championship in the 5k race with a score of 67.  The Lynx benefited from strong efforts by freshman Charlotte Goff (Osterville, MA) who crossed the finish second overall (21:01), and junior Heather Peng (Palo Alto, CA) who finished the race in fourth place (21:07). 

Finishing behind Lesley was Curry College (74), Johnson State (103), Mount Ida (136), Green Mountain College (145) Eastern Nazarene College (147) and Bay Path College (207).
