No. 15 Men's Volleyball Falls In Season-Opener At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The No. 15 Elms College men's volleyball team picked up a first-set win but fell 3-1 to No. 14 Southern Virginia in the 2019 season-opener for both teams on Friday night.

The Blazers (0-1) won the first set 25-17 but were on the wrong end of back-to-back 25-23 nail-biters before dropping the fourth and final set 25-21.

Jovanny Torres led Elms with 16 kills and hit .263 for the Blazers, while Jeremy Torres added 13 kills at a .226 clip. John Dunphy delivered 23 assists and Carlos Mercado had 18 assists to go with 10 digs in his Elms debut.

Elms hit .237 in the match while Southern Virginia hit .207. The Knights held a 37-35 advantage in digs.

Nahuel Recabarren led all players with 21 kills for Southern Virginia and Paul Clark added 14 kills on at .379 hitting percentage for the Knights.

The Blazers continue their season-opening weekend with a pair of matches at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
