Blazers Dismantle Newbury In 3-0 Sweep

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's volleyball team bounced back from back-to-back losses against top-15 competition with a stress-free 3-0 win over Newbury College on Thursday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.

After falling to No. 1 Springfield and No. 14 Endicott in their last two matches, the Blazers picked up a 25-9, 25-10, 25-13 win over the Nighthawks to improve to 14-6 overall and 7-2 in league play. Newbury falls to 3-16 on the season and 2-7 in the NECC.

Martin Acevedo (Carolina, P.R.) led the Blazer charge with 12 kills without an error, hitting .667. He added nine digs, coming up one shy of a double-double. John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.) had 16 assists and Kahlil Peters (Hartford, Conn.) added 11, helping Elms hit .350 as a team in the win.

Trevor Thome (Oxford, Conn.) led Newbury with seven kills and seven digs. Joshua Thome (Oxford, Conn.) added five kills and seven digs for the Nighthawks.

Elms owned a 49-36 advantage in digs and an 11-0 lead in aces. The Blazers held Newbury to a -.085 hitting percentage for the match.

Both teams continue NECC play on Saturday as Elms will visit Eastern Nazarene and Newbury will play two matches against Lesley.
