Blazers Complete SUNY Poly Invite Sweep With Wins Over Rivier, Wells On Saturday

MARCY, N.Y. – The Elms College men's volleyball team completed a four-match sweep at the SUNY Poly Invitational on Saturday, picking up wins over Rivier and Wells to close out the season-opening tournament.

The Blazers (4-0) opened the day with a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-18) win over Rivier. Elms dominated from start to finish, hitting .321 in the contest while holding Rivier to a .123 hitting percentage. Jeremy Torres led EC with 15 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Martin Acevedo added 11 kills and six blocks, while David Hernandez finished with 15 kills while hitting .467. Setter John Dunphy tallied 33 assists for the Blazers.

Elms extended its season-opening win streak with a 3-1 win over Wells to close out the tournament, but it didn't come easily. After pulling ahead 1-0 with a lopsided first-set win, the Blazers fell 25-16 in the second to go into the break even a 1-1. Despite a comfortable third-set win, Wells pushed Elms to the brink in the fourth set before EC pulled out the 25-23 win.

Dunphy picked up 40 assists in the win for Elms, while leading the Blazers to a .231 hitting percentage. Torres had a team-best 20 kills on 50 attempts, while Acevedo added 14. Audrye Alejandro finished with 11 digs to lead the Blazers.

Elms continues play with three matches next week, facing Stevens on Jan. 26 and Medaille and Kean (N.J) on Jan. 27.
