Men's Volleyball Falls to Daniel Webster College, 3-1
NASHUA, N.H. – Elms College junior middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) smashed a team-best 15 kills and sophomore middle hitter Angel Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) added 14, but Daniel Webster College used a match-best 17 kills from Joe Walz (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to help the Eagles to a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22) win in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
With the loss, Elms concludes its regular season 14-13 overall, 7-5 in league play, while Daniel Webster improves to 15-11 overall, 10-2 in NECC action.
Elms' junior setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) notched 38 assists, while senior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) floored seven kills and registered a match-high 14 digs. Rainey and junior opposite hitter Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) added eight digs each in the loss.
After Daniel Webster claimed a 25-22 victory in the opening set, Elms answered with a 25-23 win in the second frame as Castro delivered back-to-back kills to break a 23-23 stalemate and even the match at one set each.
With the score tied 22-22 in the third frame, Hendrix registered a solo block, Elms suffered an attacking error and Darrien Mason (Farmington, Conn.) connected for a kill to give the Eagles a 25-22 win and set the contest at 2-1 in favor of Daniel Webster.
In the fourth stanza, Elms' freshman outside hitter Aleksandr Kuzmenko (Chicopee, Mass.) downed a kill to pull the Blazers to within one at 23-22, but two consecutive errors allowed the Eagles to seal the win.
