Westfield State Downs Elms On 90th Minute Strike

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Westfield State men's soccer team needed a last-minute goal to slide past Elms College on Wednesday night, snatching a 3-2 win over the Blazers.

The Owls (4-4-2) took a 2-0 lead into halftime but Elms (4-9) evened the score with a 56th minute strike from Shaquille Robinson (New York, N.Y.) and a 68th minute goal from Colby Macdonald (Bristol, Conn.).

The game appeared destined for overtime until Kieran Moriarty (West Springfield, Mass.) scored a 90th minute game winner to give the Owls the 3-2 victory.

Westfield State out-shot Elms 25-12 in the game. Elms goalkeeper A.J. Oliveira (Beacon Falls, Conn.) made 12 saves. Robinson fired four shots for Elms, all on-goal, while Anthony Romei (Enfield, Conn.) had three.

Both teams return to the pitch on Oct. 13 as Elms resumes New England Collegiate Conference play at Southern Vermont while Westfield State visits MASCAC foe Bridgewater State.
