Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker In NECC Opener At Newbury

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Elms College men's soccer team was on the wrong end of a late flurry of goals on Saturday, falling 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion at Newbury in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.

The Blazers (0-5, 0-1 NECC) and Nighthawks (2-2-1, 1-0 NECC) played 70 scoreless minutes before Newbury struck first with a 71st minute goal from Andrew Kalombo.

Elms evened the score in the 85th minute when Anthony Romei scored his first goal of the season to make the score 1-1. The Blazer momentum, however, was short lived. Newbury came up with the eventual game-winning goal just 80 seconds later as Josue Lopez delivered the heroics.

Newbury held a 20-10 advantage in shots and led 8-3 in corner kicks in the game. Julian Brosi made six saves in net for Elms while Chris Tran needed four saves to get the win for the Nighthawks.

Elms will step out of conference to host Sage on Sept. 19. Newbury hosts Emerson on Sept. 17.
