MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS DOWN MAINE MARITIME, 3-1

CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 23, 2006 - Elms College senior midfielder Matt Kapinos (Ludlow, MA) netted a pair of first-half goals and the Blazers won for the second time in their last three games with a 3-1 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms College improved to 2-3 overall, 1-1 NAC. Maine Maritime remained winless as it fell to 0-6-1 overall, 0-1 NAC.

In the 10th minute, Kapinos intercepted an attempted clear from the top of the penalty area and blasted a shot over Maine Maritime senior goalkeeper Josh Heath (Bangor, ME) to give the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead.

Kapinos added his second goal of the game and second of the season in the 23rd minutes off a rebound to extend the Blazers' lead to 2-0.

Junior midfielder Nda Kaslong (Jos, Nigeria) added his second goal of the season just 1:37 into the second half to run the Blazers' lead to 3-0.

Maine Maritime junior midfielder Tyler Eads (Belfast, ME) netted an unassisted goal in the 90th minute to help the Mariners avoid the shutout.

Elms College sophomore forward Patrick Kayego (Springfield, MA) added a pair of assists, while freshman forward Brian Murca (Chicopee, MA) added an assist on Kapinos' second goal of the match.

Heath finished with seven saves for the Mariners, while Elms College sophomore Nick Pellegrini (Ludlow, MA) and junior Chris Lucas (Westfield, MA) combined for two stops in the victory.

Elms College returns to NAC play when it hosts Husson College on Sunday, September 23.
