Heartbreak For Blazer Hoops At Lesley

MEDRORD, Mass. – The Elms College men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat at Lesley University on Wednesday night, falling 66-65 as the Lynx connected on a game-winning put-back with just two seconds left.

The Blazers led 65-64 with 23 seconds to play and had a chance to extend the lead at the free throw line, but freshman Justin Feliciano missed the front end of a one-and-one and Lesley secured the rebound and called timeout. Lesley missed twice on the other end of the floor, but got an offensive rebound both times, the second one from A.J. Genova, and Genova put the Lynx ahead 66-65 with his put-back.

Elms got off a potential game-winner, but D.J. Edelen's 3-point attempt as time expired was off the mark.

A controversial moment occured in the first half when Kewan Smoot appeared to make two free throws, his only attempts of the game, but was officially credited with splitting his pair of attempts. When officials gathered to discuss the situation, the official scorebook ruling of a missed first attetmp prevailed.

Kewan Smoot led Elms with 15 points and added six rebounds. Edelen added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Blazers, and David Lopez Jr. finished with nine points, five assists and three steals.

Chase Howard led all scorers with 22 points for Lesley, and Joey Martin added 15. Treyvon Trent scored 12 points and Genova contributed 10 off the bench, none more important than his last two.

The Blazers committed just 10 turnovers in the game and had 12 assists on 25 made field goals, but were hindered by poor free throw shooting and a large rebounding discrepancy. Elms went just 8-of-16 at the free throw line while the Lynx enjoyed a 50-34 advantage.

Elms will return home for its final two home games of the season, beginning Feb. 6 against Newbury before the home finale Feb. 9 against Dean.
