McGuire's Late Goal Lifts Blazer Field Hockey To Victory

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- A late goal from Jeszenia McGuire lifted the Elms College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday at Leary Field.

McGuire broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute and the Blazers (4-9) fought off a final Beaver (1-8) push over the final four minutes to pick up the non-conference victory. McGuire's goal, her team-leading eighth of the season, came off a rebound in front of the net.

Despite the result, the Beavers controlled possession throughout the majority of the game. UMaine-Farmington held a 25-7 advantage in shots in and a 17-1 lead in penalty corners in the contest.

McGuire registered four of the seven Elms shots while Madison Messier had the other three. Jillian Lapponese recorded six saves for the Blazers and Nora Newman had one while playing the final 22-plus minutes in goal. Evelyn DeVaux helped keep UMaine-Farmington off the scoreboard with four defensive saves.

Emma Martineau finished with a game-high nine shots, including five on goal, while Kyla Sturtevant added six and Andrea Stemm finished with five.

Blazer seniors McGuire, Messier, Lapponese, Hayley Omahen and Sam Wegiel were honored in a Senior Day ceremony before the contest.
Elms will be back in action on Oct. 9 at Union (N.Y.) while the Beavers will visit Colby-Sawyer on Oct. 7.
