Field Hockey Falls At New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Elms College field hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead but couldn't hold on, falling 4-2 at New England College in New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday.

Jeszenia McGuire (Brimfield, Mass.) put the Blazers (3-7, 1-1 NECC) on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 27^th minute, and Elms took the advantage into the second half.

NEC (2-7, 1-0 NECC), however, scored the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead. Madison Booker evened the score in the 43^rd minute and Anya Owens gave the Pilgrims their first lead with a 51^st minute score. Sofia Castriotta and Ciara Jeffrey each added goals in the 56^th minute to give NEC a 4-1 advantage. Madison Gabel (Agawam, Mass.) scored in the 62^nd minute to cut the deficit to 4-2 but that's how the game would end.

Elms was out-shot 19-15 in the game and the Pilgrims held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Evelyn DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) had a defensive save for Elms while Maddie Tkachuk had one for the Pilgrims. Blazer goalkeepers Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) and Nora Newman (Woburn, Mass.) combined to make nine saves for Elms in the game.

The Blazers return to action on Oct. 2 when they host Becker.
