WPI's Big Second Half Downs Blazers

CHICOPEE, Mass. – After a scoreless first half, the Elms College field hockey team suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of WPI at Leary Field on Saturday afternoon.

Blazer (0-4) goalkeeper Nora Newman (Woburn, Mass.) came up with six first-half saves to keep the game scoreless at the break after WPI (3-0) fired 14 shots in the first half.

The Engineers, however, scored five times on 19 shots in the second half to pick up the win. Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 40th minute and Abby O'Sullivan (Walpol, Mass.), Emma Bennett (Hampstead, N.H.), Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, N.H.) and Julia Vanderstreet (West Bridgewater, Mass.) added scores as Sullivan, Shannon Hynes (Auburn, Mass.) and Angie Ferro (Northboro, Mass.) picked up assists in the game.

Newman finished with nine saves in over 58 minutes of play before giving way to Erin Thibodeau (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who picked up two saves. WPI out-shot the Blazers 33-4 in the game and held a 20-4 advantage in penalty corners. Madison Messier had two of Elms' four shots in the game, including the only shot on goal.

The Blazers return to action next week at Sage on Sept. 12 before hosting Sewanee on Sept. 15. WPI will host Worcester State on Sept. 13.
