Late Goals Doom Blazer Field Hockey

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Two late goals from Western Connecticut spoiled the night for the Elms College field hockey team on Wednesday as the Colonials stole a 2-1 win in dramatic style at Leary Field.

The Blazers (0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Sarah Bengston (Bristol, Conn.) slammed home the game's first goal after a pass from Jeszy McGuire (Brimfield, Mass.) left her wide open in front of the goal.

Despite being on the ropes for most of the second half, the Blazers held the lead into the 67th minute. But the Colonials (2-1) evened the score with a goal from Jordan Campbell off the pass from Kimberly Brower.

The Colonials kept the pressure on in the waning minutes of the game, and earned a penalty corner as time expired. Brower and Campbell took advantage once again, with Brower earning the finish off a pass from Campbell to give Western Connecticut the 2-1 victory.

The Colonials out-shot Elms 34-3 in the game and held a 25-4 advantage in penalty corners. Blazer goalkeeper Nora Newman (Woburn, Mass.) came up with 17 saves in the game.

Elms will return to action at home against WPI on Sept. 8 while Western Connecticut will host Castleton the same day.
