Blazers Drop Season-Opener In OT

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Despite taking a 1-0 lead after Carissa Ramirez's (San Diego, Calif.) first-half goal, the Elms College field hockey team eventually fell 2-1 in overtime in the season-opener against Colby-Sawyer on Friday evening.

Colby Sawyer junior Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) scored 25 seconds into the overtime period to lift the Chargers to victory. The Chargers tied the game 10 minutes into the second half when Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) found the stick of senior teammate Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) who deposited the game-tying goal into the back of the cage. Colby-Sawyer finished the game with a 20-10 margin in shots and a 10-3 edge in corners.

Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) registered a team-high three shots for the Blazers while Francesca Davitt (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Hayley Omahen (San Diego, Calif.), and Jeszenia McGuire (Brimfield, Mass.) each had two. Nora Newman (Woburn, Mass.) replaced Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) in goal 19 minutes into the contest and finished with four saves for the Blazers.

Colby-Sawyer goalie Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) had a pair of saves while junior Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) and freshman Whitney O'Brien (Derry, N.H.) chipped in with a defensive save apiece.

Elms will travel to Gordon on Monday for a 2 p.m. contest.  The Chargers return to action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game at Gordon.
