Worcester State Tops Field Hockey in the Season Opener 3-1

Chicopee, Mass- Elms College Senior Imogen Leonard (Sharon, Mass) scored the Blazers first goal of the season at the 19:07 mark in the second half, to bring them within a goal of Worcester State University. But the Lancers' used a goal by Krissy Kenney (Rehoboth, Mass) with 4:00 remaining in the game to put the contest out of reach.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-1 overall, while Worcester State starts its 2014 campaign 1-0.

Taylor Ledwith (Springfield, Mass) scored the first goal of the season for Worcester in the first half at the 14:31 mark, which came after a pass from Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass) that originated from a penalty corner.  

The second goal came at the 30:52 mark, came this time from O'Rourke, Meghan Pini (Natick, Mass) picked up the assist.

The two teams then played back and forth field hockey, until Leonard found the ball in front of the cage, and put it home at the 49:53 mark into the game.  It seemed that Elms was gaining momentum and would have a chance to tie the game, until Kenney received a perfect touch pass from to put the game away.

Lancers' goalkeeper Kathryn Salemme (Boxboro, Mass) turned away 1 of 2 shots that Elms put on her to earn the win, while Blazers' Junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, Mass) suffered the loss despite saving 15 shots on goal.

Elms returns to non-league action Thursday, September 4 when they host Western Conn. State at 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
