Baseball Comes Up Short At Rhode Island College

Providence, RI – The Elms College Baseball team battled hard but dropped a road game at Rhode Island College 16-14. The non-conference game turned into a back and forth slugfest with the two teams combining for 34 hits and 30 runs.

Elms struck early when they got on the board in the top of the first, highlighted by an RBI triple from Josh Pasini (Enfield, CT) to give the Blazers the 3-0 advantage. RIC would respond in the bottom of the first when they scored five runs, including back-to-back home runs from, for the 5-3 advantage.

RIC broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run triple from, to take a seven-run, 10-3, lead. The Blazers would chipped away at the Anchormen lead in the top of the fourth platting three runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Pasini, to make it 10-6.

Elms used two runs in the top of the sixth, including an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Kris Alverado (Springfield, MA), to cut the lead to 11-10. The Blazers then scored three in the top of the seventh to go up by two, 13-11.

RIC would come right back and used a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to knot the game, 13-13, after seven innings of play.

The Blazers regained the lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from senior center fielder Alex Hoss (Stafford Springs, CT) pushing the score to 14-13.

Once again, RIC responded and the Anchormen capitalized on an Elms miscue when a liner was dropped and allowed the game-tying run. The Anchormen then took a 15-14 lead on a bases loaded walk and would grab an insurance run after a hit by a pitch, for the 16-14 advantage.

Junior shortstop Josh Pasini (Enfield, CT) led the way for Elms, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Nathan Ayala (Springfield, MA) was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI in the loss for the Blazers.

Junior Jake Rockefeller then held Elms scoreless in the top of the ninth to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Cody Fisher would take the loss for the Blazers.

Elms is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Becker College for an NECC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
