Box scores

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA, April 19, 2009 - Junior designated hitter Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) went a combined 6 for 7 with two home runs and six RBI, and junior pitcher Dan Ingraham (Granby, MA) threw six solid innings in game one to help the Blazers earn a split of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at UMass-Dartmouth.

Behind Jacobs' 3 for 4, three-RBI effort in game one, the Blazers posted a 9-7 victory. The host Corsairs scored a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

With its win in the first game, Elms College (13-14) set a new program-record with its 13th win of the year. The Blazers' previous record of 12 victories was set last season. UMass-Dartmouth moved to 7-20.

Jacobs hammered a solo homer in the second inning to give the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead. He then added a two-run double as part of a three-run, third to extend the Blazers' lead to 4-0.

Elms College plated two more runs in the fourth before sophomore catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, MA) delivered a RBI double in the fifth to run the Blazers' lead to 7-0.

The Corsairs struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Bonavita responded with a RBI single in the Blazers' two-run seventh that extended the lead to 9-3. UMass-Dartmouth would score four times in the seventh for the 9-7 final.

Ingraham threw five scoreless innings and allowed just three earned runs and scattered eight hits over six innings to improve to 3-3 on the season.

In the nightcap, UMass-Dartmouth scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead to claim a split of the twinbill.

Trailing, 1-0, the Corsairs sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Eric Rodriguez (Burlington, MA) put UMD ahead, 2-1.  Freshman second baseman Dan DeMello (Taunton, MA) followed with an RBI single, junior left fielder Tom Ladore (Milford, CT) blooped a drive down the right field line that dropped in for a two-run triple, and sophomore first baseman Chris Benevides (Fall River, MA) singled Ladore home. UMass Dartmouth added two more runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to DeMello and Ladore's infield grounder, and junior third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA) doubled home a run in the sixth.

Jacobs drove in all three Blazer runs with an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth. Freshman John Quigg (Weymouth, MA) went six innings to earn the win in his first collegiate start.

Elms College returns to non-conference play at Rhode Island College on Tuesday, April 21. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
