Baseball Earns Split With Husson In NAC Doubleheader

HOLYOKE, MA, April 21, 2007 - Elms College freshman pitcher Mike Bieber (Calverton, NY) struck out five in 6.0 innings in game two and junior catcher Joe Sawa (Chicopee, MA) went a combined 5 for 5 at the plate to help lift the Blazers to a split of Saturday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader with Husson College at MacKenzie Stadium.

Husson won game one 12-6, but Elms College salvaged the split with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

With the split, Elms College improves to 5-15-1 overall, 2-4 NAC, while Husson moves to 6-15 overall, 2-2 NAC.

In game one, Elms College took a quick 2-0 lead before Husson plated six runs in the top half of the second and used a three-run bases-loaded triple off the bat of senior shortstop Adam Sheehan (Bucksport, ME) to take a 6-2 lead.

Elms College responded with two runs in their half of the second to bring the score to 6-4.

Husson then used a three-run third to post a 9-4 lead before the Blazers cut the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the third.

Husson plated three runs over the final four innings to pull away to victory.

Freshman second baseman Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) tallied three hits and an RBI in the losing effort for the Blazers.

Husson sophomore third baseman Nick Arthers (Belfast, ME) launched a solo homer, and Sheehan was 2 for 4 in the game and added a double in the game one win for the Eagles. 

In game two, the Blazers scored two runs in the second, third and sixth innings. Sawa tallied three singles and a RBI, and junior catcher Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) added two RBI in the win for the Blazers.

Bieber allowed just three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work in game two.

Husson sophomore pitcher Chris Pease (Hampden, ME) struck out seven batters in a solid 6.0 innings of work for the Eagles in the game two loss.

The Blazers return to NAC action on Sunday, April 22 when they host St. Joseph's College (ME). Game one of the doubleheader starts at 12:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium.
