Baseball Swept By Castleton State In Doubleheader

NORWICH, CT, April 7, 2007 - Elms College freshman shortstop Dan Ingraham (Granby, MA) went 2 for 3 at the plate in game one, but Castleton State senior pitcher Tom Cummings (Athol, MA) pitched a two-hit shutout in game two to help lead the Spartans to a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader sweep over the Blazers on Saturday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.

With the two losses, Elms College drops its sixth and seventh straight games to fall to 3-12-1 overall, 0-2 NAC. Castleton wins its second and third straight games to improve to 8-7 overall, 2-0 NAC.

Castleton State pounded out 19 hits in a 15-3 win in game one, and completed the sweep with a 9-0 win as Cummings struck out nine in a complete-game effort in game two.

Castleton freshman shortstop Travis Bass (West Hartford, CT) went a combined 5 for 9 with a pair of doubles and four RBI, while senior third baseman Phil Puleo (Utica, NY) finished a combined 6 for 9 at the dish with a pair of doubles, a homerun and three RBI.

Ingraham posted a pair of hits in the first game, and freshman second baseman Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) recorded two hits in game two in the losing effort for the Blazers.

The Blazers return to action Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to WNEC for a non-conference game. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
