BASEBALL OUTLASTED BY MAINE-FARMINGTON IN NAC DOUBLEHEADER
FARMINGTON, ME, April 29, 2007 - Elms College junior first baseman Scott Netkovick (South Hadley, MA) blasted his first homerun of the season in game one, but the Blazers lost a pair of one-run games in Sunday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader with the University of Maine-Farmington at Hippach Field.
Maine-Farmington won the first game 4-3, and completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Elms College falls to 8-19-1 overall, 5-7 NAC, while Maine-Farmington improves to 8-16 overall, 5-7 NAC.
In game one, Maine-Farmington used a three-run third inning to post a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers cut the deficit to 3-1 when they scored a run in the top of the fourth.
Maine-Farmington then scored what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The Blazers rallied in the top of the sixth when Netkovick launched a solo shot to leadoff the inning. Sophomore center fielder Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, MA) then scored on a single by freshman second baseman Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) to cut the Maine-Farmington lead to 4-3.
From there, Maine-Farmington sophomore pitcher Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) induced a scoreless final inning to seal the victory. Hemdal surrendered three runs on six hits and struck out 9 in the complete-game effort for the Beavers.
In game two, Maine-Farmington took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning before the Blazers knotted the game at 1-1. Maine-Farmington then responded to score the final run of the game in the bottom of the inning to seal the 2-1 victory.
Freshman pitcher Dan Ingraham (Granby, MA) pitched a solid 5.1 innings allowing two runs and striking out four batters in the loss for the Blazers.
Maine-Farmington freshman pitcher Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) gave up one run on five hits and struck out nine in a complete-game effort for the Beavers.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday, May 1 when they host WPI in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium.
