BASEBALL FALLS TO FITCHBURG, 18-13
FITCHBURG, MA, April 26, 2007 - Elms College junior third baseman Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) scorched his fourth homer of the year but Fitchburg State tallied 21 hits to post an 18-13 victory over the Blazers in Thursday night's non-conference baseball game at Elliot Field.
With the loss, Elms College falls to 6-17-1 overall. Fitchburg State improves to 14-14 overall with the win.
The Blazers took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning before Fitchburg tallied 7 in the frame to take a 9-7 lead. The teams then exchanged runs in the fifth inning to bring the score to 10-8.
In the top half of the sixth inning, the Blazers scored four runs to reclaim the lead at 12-10 before Fitchburg knotted the contest in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs to bring the game to 11-11.
Fitchburg then went ahead for good scoring four runs in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.
Hawes finished 3 for 5 on the day and added four RBI, while sophomore right fielder Joe Esile (Milford, CT) smacked his first homer of the year and finished 2 for 4 on the day with three RBI in the losing effort for the Blazers.
Fitchburg sophomore first baseman Kris Breen (Griswold, CT) was a solid 4 for 5 at the plate including a pair of homeruns and five RBI in the win.
Fitchburg freshman pitcher Ryan Dauley (Blackstone, MA) was solid in three innings of relief work to pick up the win. Falcons pitching registered nine strikeouts on the day.
The Blazers return to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Thomas for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
