Dr. Michael Theulen Hired As Elms Athletic Director

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Dr. Michael Theulen has been selected to lead Elms College athletics as the department’s next Director of Athletics, Elms College Dean of Students Teresa Winters announced.

“Mike is an experienced leader in NCAA Division III athletic administration,” Winters said. “We are excited about the next phase for our athletic department, for the college, and for our student-athletes. We want to provide our student-athletes with an exceptional Elms Experience in the classroom and outside the classroom. We look forward to Mike leading that initiative with our talented athletic department.”

Dr. Theulen most recently served as the Director of Athletics at nearby Western New England University for 19 years. During that time, he also served two stints as the school’s head men’s basketball coach (2004-08, 2011-15).

Western New England captured 63 combined conference championships under Theulen’s direction, including 30 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles and 22 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) crowns and made 51 NCAA appearances. The Golden Bears also accumulated 42 All-Americans and 18 Academic All-Americans during Theulen’s tenure.

Theulen holds a Doctor of Physical Education from Springfield College, a master’s degree in Physical Education Administration from the University of South Dakota, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Coaching from Keene State. Prior to working at Western New England, he was a faculty member in physical education and a coach at Springfield College.

Dr. Theulen will begin at Elms on Jan. 28.
