Blazer Women Win NECC Champions Cup; Men Finish Third

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Elms College women have been awarded the New England Collegiate Conference Champions Cup for the first time, while the Blazer men finished third in the NECC Champions Cup standings, the league announced on Wednesday.

The Elms women finished the 2017-2018 year with a score of .787. In the fall season, the Blazers were both the regular and postseason champions in volleyball, while also finishing with a share of the regular season field hockey title before winning the championship. Elms also had a strong showing on the soccer pitch with a second-place finish in postseason play.

In the winter, basketball finished top five and earned a playoff berth. Elms continued its success into the spring, with softball finishing fourth in the regular season and earning a playoff berth, while the lacrosse team finished undefeated in regular season play, and went on to win the NECC Championship.

The Blazers just beat out the Lesley University women, who finished with a score of .762. The Lynx nabbed the regular season and postseason soccer title, as well as the women’s cross country championship. They were also the runner-up in both regular season and postseason volleyball play. In the spring, the Lynx claimed the regular season softball title. Finishing in third, with a score of .660 is Becker College, who won the basketball championship. Their softball team finished second in regular season play and reached the championship game of the NECC tournament. 

On the men’s side, Mitchell parlayed titles in soccer and baseball into the winning score of .672. Soccer finished tied for first place in the regular season standings before taking home the championship. Basketball would finish in a three-way tie for second place in the regular season. In the spring, their baseball team would have sole possession of the regular season title, before going unbeaten in the tournament to take the Championship. 

Southern Vermont was second with .612, with Elms right on their heels at .609. The Mountaineers captured both the cross country championship and the basketball championship, while the Blazers won the men’s volleyball title.
